At the start of the war the Indian Corps were in India but it soon became clear that reinforcements were desperately needed on the Western Front, so in September they moved to France. The 2nd Black Watch battalion of the Bareilly Brigade in the Meerut Division landed at Marseilles on 12 October 1914 and during the last two days of the month the brigade relieved some of 5th Division near Givenchy and Festubert. The first entry in the Battalion Diary was made on 30th October with a brief entry about telephone communication being made with the trenches. Nothing else is recorded so the circumstances behind the death of Edward White, who died from wounds on 31st October are not known . |
